Ten years. It’s a bit of a milestone, and a good moment to pause and reflect on what’s happened since I first joined Managementors back in 2016.
Coming from a background in the Third Sector, moving into consulting was a huge change for me both personally and professionally. From a predictable 5-day-a-week London commute to committing to working away Monday to Friday in different locations across the country, it was certainly a risk. But looking back, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.
In my time at Managementors, I’ve had the opportunity to work on client engagements in France, Germany and Budapest, as well as more locations across the UK than I’d care to count! I’ve worked across both public and private sector organisations spanning a huge range of industries and working environments, from Highways to IT services, FM to Construction, and Aircraft Engineering to School Meals. One of the great privileges of consulting is the range of people you get to meet and work with. Understanding different people’s drivers and motivations, getting under the skin of how different organisations operate and enabling teams to overcome their biggest operational challenges is what continues to excite me about the work we do, ten years on.
Managementors has been a fantastic place to develop my career and grow as a consultant – over the last decade, I’ve had continual support and encouragement from the business, and no shortage of opportunities to learn, take on new challenges and broaden my experience.In this time, I have learnt a huge amount about what makes transformation successful, why it can fail, and how to make change “stick”, and I continue to take learnings from each project I work on.
During this time, Managementors has changed substantially – we have doubled in size, navigated through Brexit and a global pandemic, expanded into new sectors, achieved ChMC accreditation, broadened our service offering, and received recognition for several projects at MCA and Industry Awards. It’s been exciting to be part of that journey, help shape our consulting team, and support the business in laying strong foundations for further growth.
Being part of a small consultancy has also given me wide exposure to operational management and business development, enabling me to take on a broad range of internal and external responsibilities. One of the benefits of being part of a smaller organisation is that if you spot something that could be done better, there’s usually an opportunity to do something about it.
There have been a fair few milestones in my life outside work too – two house moves, a wedding and becoming a parent, to name a few. Of course, there have been ups and downs along the way – that’s life! But if I had to pick one thing that’s kept me at Managementors, more than anything else, it would be the people.
At Managementors, we typically work in two or three-person project teams, which means trust, teamwork and collaboration is key, as well as being okay with spending a LOT of time together. I really have worked with some brilliant and hugely talented colleagues over the years and made some lifelong friends. I’ve also been lucky enough to work with fantastic clients – senior leaders who have been willing to challenge “the way we’ve always done things”, push their teams to go from “good” to “great”, and have put their trust in us to enable them to drive positive change within their organisations.
Looking back, it’s fair to say there’s been a lot of hard work (and some serious mileage!), but I’ve had a lot of fun along the way.
So, thank you to everyone who’s been part of the journey so far, and here’s to the next ten years!
